C. 28782 FRIDAY, FEB. 13,1981 Price 10c Per Cop- Weather Wednesday: high 57, low 30, rain at 7 a m. was .10. It really got cold Thursday morning. For those who like cold weather, it gave them an opportunity to be happy. The Soviet Union, in a letter from Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko to Secretary of State Alexander Haig charged the United States with "open interference" in Poland and other antagonistic acts. A busboy at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel was arrested Wednesday night and booked on eight counts of homicide in connection with the arson fire that killed eight people at the 30- story hotel and injured 198 others. Arrested was Philip Bruce Cline, 23. Good neighbors. Although in two different states, Landrum High School is allowing Tryon High School to host the Appalachian Conference Basketball Tournament in the Landrum gym. The Landrum gym is one of the finest anywhere and has ample parking facilities. We often hear about the rivalries between schools, but seldom about how they are helping each other. New Business Bill Neal and Terry Petty have opened P & N Pools, Inc. The ad in today's paper states that special winter rates are in effect for swimming pools. They are handling Mattson Pools and specialize in vinyl liner in ground swimming pools, rectangular figure eight or oval pools. Special Meeting For Commissioners There will be a special meeting of the Polk County Commissioners Wed., Feb. 18th at 12 noon at the Commisisoner’s Meeting Room in the courthouse annex. The items on the agenda are Bid opening, communications equipment, possible action on communication center. Saluda Club The Saluda Community Club will host a covered dish supper Monday night at the fire hall at 7 p.m. Bring a covered dish and "Remember Saluda When " Meets Wednesday The Dogwood Garden Club of Columbus will have a meeting Wednesday. Feb. 18 at the home of Mrs. Irene Daumiller for a 1 p.m. luncheon. Mrs. Ruth Wallace will be co hostess. Members are reminded to bring patriotic readings to this meeting. Open House Monday In Saluda The City of Saluda and the Centennial Celebration Committee invite everyone to a 100th Anniversary Birthday Party-Open House Monday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall. Post Office Closed Monday There will be no mail delivery or window service at the Post Office Monday as it is a federal holiday Mail will be placed in lock boxes at the Post Office as usual. Miss FFA Sweetheart Miss Kelly Brown, daughter of Mrs. Carol Helms, was crowned the 1981 Miss FFA Sweetheart on January 31st. She is a junior at Landrum High School First runner-up was Mjss Roseann Little, daughter of Mayor and Mrs. Dever Little and second runner-up was Miss Candi Davis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Davis. Basketball Tourney Next Week The Appalachian Conference Basketball Tournament will be held next week at the Landrum High School gym This is Tryon High School's year to host the tournament, but the seating and parking are not adequate at the Tryon facility. Landrum High School has allowed Tryon to use its gym for the tournament. The Tournament will be held Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Junior Varsity games will be at 5 p.m.; the girls games at 6:30 p.m. and the boys games at 8 p.m On Monday night the No. 4 and No. 5 teams will play; Wednesday the No. 3 and No 6 teams; Thursday, the winner of No. 4 and No. 5 will play No. 1; Friday the winner of No. 3 and No. 6 will play No. 2. Saturday night are the championship games. Tryon JVs, Edneyville girls and Tryon boys are the No. 1 seeded teams. Other position will oe decided after tonight's games. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in regular season automatically qualify for the District playoffs. The third spot in the playoffs will be determed by the finish in the tournament. Saluda Republicans Meet Feb. 23rd Saluda Republican Precinct No. 4 will meet Monday, Feb. 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at the nome of Jack Morse
